The Power of Rural Votes in the Wake of Disaster
As Western North Carolina grapples with the aftermath of one of the most devastating natural disasters in our state’s history, our hearts are heavy with the images and stories of destruction. The impact of this disaster on our community is profound, and it’s a stark reminder of the fragility of life. Yet, amidst the chaos, a beacon of hope exists in our communities’ incredible resilience and solidarity. Neighbors, first responders, utility workers, and our military are all working tirelessly to restore and rebuild. It is a testament to the strength and spirit of our people.
Organizations like NC Baptist on a Mission and Samaritan’s Purse are on the ground, providing essential aid and support. They need volunteers with the skills, strength, and compassion to help rebuild lives. They need additional resources to ensure folks in need, have what they need. And right now our number one priority is to assist in any and everyway possible.
On the horizon of recovery, we can also see an election looming – and whether or not we want to admit it, those ballot choices impact our recovery abilities in times of crisis. A staggering 28 counties in Western North Carolina received a Federal emergency designation, yet as of this morning, just five county boards of elections offices were closed and in three of those, staff were back to work. Yet, so many unknowns remain – what conditions will roads be in as the election approaches? How many may still be without power, water, or even their homes?
With that in mind, once we’ve maxed out directly assisting recovery efforts, another crucial way we can contribute is ensuring that impacted citizens have the resources and opportunity to cast their ballots. We must also make our voices heard by showing up at our voting locations.
For many, voting is not a priority right now – and if we’re being honest, it might not be one on November 5th. But this is precisely why those who can vote must step up. Your vote is a powerful tool in shaping the future of our communities. Rural North Carolina has the power to influence the outcome of close statewide races, often balancing the urban vote. Without the participation of Western NC voters, the candidates who represent the interests of farmers, rural communities, and local businesses are at a significant disadvantage.
We can make a difference. Gather your Sunday school class, your community groups, and your neighbors. Organize early voting events, offer rides to polling sites, and encourage like-minded people to participate. Early voting is a powerful tool to increase voter turnout. An ice cream social after early voting can be a simple yet effective way to unite people and motivate them to vote.
In these challenging times, our rural votes count more than ever. YOU can impact this critical election and ensure that ALL voices are heard. Let’s come together, support our communities, and make a difference—both in recovery and at the polls. Your participation is crucial, and together, we can overcome these challenges and build a stronger, more resilient North Carolina.
