Our Pro-Ag Supreme Court Playbook
North Carolina has become ripe with single-issue non-profit groups that national and international donors and organizations fund. They focus on their “pet” fundraising issues and often rise in popularity by bashing today’s agriculture sectors – even though 99% of farms in our state are family farms. They are continuously lurking around, hunting for dollars to fuel their non-profit infrastructure by using fear and intimidation tactics to raise awareness of their issues. Their goal? Blow up the system and bring pain to the ag industry.
These non-profits now continue to expand their “playbook” to include a legal court strategy. They enlist hungry trial lawyers to pile on and target ag as their next class action cash cow – and to the farmer’s and agribusiness’s detriment, have created a formidable alliance.
This tactic forces us into a new arena. Thankfully, the NC Farm Bureau and the NC Chamber have long ago established legal foundations to help defend agriculture in North Carolina.
As ag’s legislative efforts continue to pursue pro-ag legislation and regulatory reform, the court system is where our gains can easily be lost. Judges, juries, and justices are often forced to decide complex matters best left to legislative and regulatory bodies.
Constitutionalist judges understand this needed separation of powers.
The NC Ag Partnership recently spearheaded an effort to ensure pro-ag and pro-business justices earn seats on the State Supreme Court in November. Two crucial Supreme Court seats are up for election and need our focus. NC Ag Partnership leaders have agreed to make a $50,000 match to fund this critical effort to take back the NC Supreme Court. Each dollar raised to $50,000 will be matched. In addition, every penny will be spent on education surrounding the upcoming Supreme Court Election – dollar in, dollar out. Through this action, we are providing a complimentary effort to turn out a portion of the electorate that is left out of many other political contact efforts. Many of you have already joined us in this effort. Thank you for your trust and confidence.
You may remember in 2020 when constitutionalist Justice Paul Newby won his election by just 401 votes. In fact, three NC State Supreme Court races were on the ballot in 2020, and all were decided by 1.5% or less. We can not take anything for granted in this final month.
We can and must make a difference in the critical election of two more justices in 2022. The court majority hangs in the balance.
Yes, many of us are constantly bombarded by asks and political messaging. However, you know the people associated with the NC Ag Partnership. Any amount you can commit today will help us emphasize the importance of these races in areas often overlooked by other educational efforts.
The opposition has sufficient funding; we can continue to “turn up the volume” with smaller donations. If you are interested in contributing to this effort, please make your checks out to: “NC Ag Action PAC” and send them to 1101 Haynes Street, Suite 102, Raleigh, NC 27604
Please reach out to us and let us know if you plan to contribute, we will be on the lookout for your check. Any amount will help us make a difference.
Again, thank you for your trust and confidence.
